Node.js Microservices Interview Guide

When microservices help, the costs teams underestimate, and Node-specific operational notes.
When microservices help
Microservices help when independent teams need independent deploy cycles, or when parts of the system scale and fail differently. They are a poor default for a small team still finding product-market fit.
Costs people underestimate
- Network latency and partial failures
- Distributed transactions and consistency
- Observability across services
- Local development complexity
- Versioning and contract testing
Design basics
Define clear service boundaries around business capabilities. Prefer asynchronous integration for non-critical paths. Make APIs idempotent where retries happen. Own your data — avoid shared databases that secretly couple services.
Node-specific notes
Node services should stay small in CPU footprint, use aggressive timeouts, and expose health/readiness probes. Connection pools must be sized per service instance against the database’s global limit.
